EmoteADay is a lovely group that randomly features anyone that's ever submitted an emoticon to dA, to give them more exposure. Along with the deviation being featured, they add excellent descriptions, as if the art hasn't spoken for itself already. They interview emoticonists monthly as well. So if you're looking for more emoticons to love, or if you want more exposure on your emoticons, check out #EmoteADay

And by DAD, I mean Devious A Day.

Hello, everyone.

Good day to you all. Hope you don't mind me putting up this journal for explanatory purposes.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand.

I'm sorry.
Very, very sorry.

Some, if not A LOT, of people got interested in the Devious A Day Series I have started. But I haven't posted Issue #3 yet, and I feel so guilty about it. Yes, even if I was celebrating Mother's Day with family... And awesome Chinese Food. Hence, the title is "missing DAD on Mother's Day." The guilt has been building up with each passing day.

Add that guilt to sadness for the past few days, a favorite RP group is closing, and the fact I missed deadlines, you have a big ball of sulky Fluf. I've barely been on for one reason or another, and when I'm finally on, I end up finding myself in a sea of stamps I disagree with (it's even harder because I never comment or respond to these stamps), instead of doing anything at all.
I wish I could be blind to stamps. :B I am way, way too curious for my own good, and I can't help it.

So, what now?

I've been thinking for the past few days,

"What the f*ck did I come here for?"

When I try recalling my first moments at dA, this is what comes back to me. I'm not good when it comes to narrating a bit of history, but this is the best way I can explain how far dA life has been for me, and how it might've worn me out.

I came here because many of my friends at an amazing Community known as Bulbakaki had deviantART accounts as well. Sharing their work with even more people. And so I came, and I settled here.

I had even more drive to use this account when I got into Fakemon  (Fake Pokémon) and wanted to share my creations, and my ideas. It didn't get as much attention, though I was starting back then. :giggle: I had been inspired by the art of :devvzerudez:, *GregAndrade, *HourglassHero, *JelloJolteon2000, and many, many more. A friend of mine from the oekaki, namely *frenchbreadrobot, is a star in the Fakemon community- and I'm not surprised. Somehow, he's managed to emulate the "Sugimori  style" (basically the style the official art is drawn in) in this Oekaki Applet called ChibiPaint, and while he woks with SAI now, I'm still amazed with his ideas and designs. He's designed a fakemon for me as well! (I also have to mention he's the guy whose fakemon works at the oekaki inspired me so much to the point I did post my fakemon up in my dA account.

Oh, and I feel that I have to mention this, but while I was doing Fakemon, I also did a bit of Fanfiction as well. *coughthathorribleDCAthingyimadecough*

The next phase of dA life was all about Role Play. The first time I ever roleplayed was with ~Drydell-da-Vinci- who I suspect is a very, very, very distant relative I have yet to meet in some big family reunion :stare:. (In other words, a good friend who shares too much in common with me. :iconmingplz:) I never even knew it was Roleplaying! And when I realize all that character strangling and torturing was RP, I decided to check out RP groups. And damn, it was so fun, thinking up whole new characters to match the RP universe. I made Curtis, Luna, Janna Lee, and Oliver. Curtis was the first character I ever made for an RP group, which was the medieval style PKMN-Haxorshire. (It closed down though.) I made Luna for the Sci-fi Gijinka Group #POKELOID, but that group is going to close. As for Janna, she's in #Poke-SchoolOfTheArts. And Oliver? He's a resident of #PKMN-Steam. I loved- and I still do- these characters. The time I put in their histories and personalities, the fun I had thinking about the basics. Not only that, with every app, I improved in my drawing skills as well.

What came after that? I don't know, really. Perhaps a new chapter had started when I came upon `JoseFelipeM's 100 PM's project somewhere around the time I was making Fakemon. It amazed me how others contributed- really helping out. He never said that the PM's will go back to the users. He just wanted to give away and make others happy. And I was amazed how people donated regardless. It may have been within the internet, but it taught me a little about kindness. All of my points earned [from fakemon contests and all that] went to that project, and it made me feel good. I don't know why it did, but it did. Meanwhile, I stumbled on projects for others, such as the Praising Life Project, by `Infinite-Heart. The "stumbling" wouldn't stop, and I had the pleasure of encountering deviants like `lintu47, `JamminJo, `TimberClipse, and many more.

I think this was also the time I came upon a magical place, known as #dAWishingWell. I remember making a wish- gosh, I wrote "I want to be a successful artist", not realizing I had to make a dA kind of wish. :XD: But regardless of my stupidity, they patiently added my wish as one for exposure. I became happy seeing some people telling me they've granted my wish, featuring me in their journals. :) It gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling. I wanted to grant wishes as well! (I should've participated in the 31 Days of Wishes D:) But as time passed by, I tried harder and harder to make up for everything. I challenged myself to do as much #deviant365 tasks as possible! I loved making features, and I loved critiquing. I was- and still am- an admin for #Rising-Artists I found myself in a sea of tasks. I was drowning out the sorrows of real life.

I started to devote my time to "finishing off" the wishes in the pending list, giving as much as I could. After I while, a fabulous frog that goes by `SavageFrog gave me a new name, a new purpose. I had become BatFluf :batman:, the teenage female asian incarnation of the great Batman. I felt the need to grant wishes, and wishes, and wishes. And so, a great deal of my time on dA had become dedicated to whatever I thought was "giving back". But really, with everything I did, I forced myself to do better. While I believe there's nothing wrong with that... The problem was I wasn't really focusing on my work anymore. Ideas were kept inside with every obligation I gave myself. I began to neglect one thing I've always treasured, and that was practice. Despite this, I kept going and going because of all the chats and talks and the wonderful people here. Don't get me wrong- I love talking with you all, but I've written all of this for a reason.

I only noticed this last week, and again, after holding back my feelings and wearing myself out, I've been wondering what action I should take. And then I look at certain deviants, who've worn themselves out as well, and they've found a way to make things work. I'ts about time I did something that should benefit all, in a way.

It's about time I set priorities.
Make sure I'll do more without wearing myself out.

It's about time I plan something. Make things shorter but more productive. It's already enough I'm watched by awesome people, so it would only be fair if I did thing less sloppily like I used to do. I posted this journal, so I have witnesses. Hopefully one of you could see this, go to my page, and say something like, "Oh Heya Fluf When is that next thingy gonna be posted". My to-do lists kind of work- maybe I should post a to-do list journal from time to time as well.

So, with all of you reading this, I leave a list of pledges for all of you to see. As I'm extremely afraid of failing deadlines and people, maybe this would scare me sh*tless. :la: (This isn't a really, really full pledge, though. If I really can't fulfill my obligations for reasons like outings, problems, the occasional Fluf Sadness etc.)

  • I really need to get critiquing and commenting. The fact that I'm barely active as a someone who gives constructive feedback doesn't settle with me very well. However, for some reason I've been feeling less obliged to give others big and juicy feedback. So to fix this issue, I, =fluf-studios, pledge to write at least 3 constructive comments/critiques each month.

  • Groups, groups, groups. I'll be staying in all, and my tasks remain the same, whatever they may be. I, =fluf-studios, pledge to perform the tasks that any of the groups [ that I administrate] require me to perform.

  • While the feature aspect of my dA life is fairly okay, I should at least set a requirement for myself as well. I, =fluf-studios, pledge to make at least two "full" journal features each month and at least five DAD features each month.

  • And now on to the art half of this pledge list. :B I've been neglecting my literature, and I've never written real fiction. :noes: I plan to fix this by posting a kind of story, with my own fictional characters, or maybe uploading some poetry, or even putting up my Song Lyrics. :| I, =fluf-studios, pledge to upload at least one literature submission each month.

  • I thought it would be cool if I took the EMTC. I'm starting out with emoticons and pixel art, so this may help hone my skills. I, =fluf-studios, pledge to take the EMTC challenge, and submit at least one entry each month.

  • Last, but not the least, there are so many sketches and ideas I want to share. Not only that, I've been practicing over and over and making this and making that. I should care less about the quality much, and focus on improving. And for those of you who enjoy my  mediocre Digital and Traditional art, I'm hopeful this pledge would mean much to you. I, =fluf-studios, pledge to upload at least two drawings, be it Traditional or Digital each month.

Hopefully, I can follow this simple list, now that I have reasons alongside my pledges.

Okay, now that I'm done with the srs bsns...

PE: Welcome, welcome!

Wed May 8, 2013, 11:45 PM

Here, I am doing my special welcome dance that needs more steps and revamping for you~
Greetings, fellow deviantART user! I welcome you to this warm article. Here, have a seat on this massage chair, and relax. How about something to read, like say, the latest issue of DELVE? Oh, and I'll have George get your snacks. Pizza, Cookies, Cake, or something else? What beverage would you like with that? Uh-huh.

Thank you.

Ah, the joys of welcoming others. Have you ever welcomed someone to something? Online? Offline? Over at dAmn? During a Live Streaming? How about a guest? Or a co-worker? Fellow classmate? While it is nothing obligatory, a welcome can mean a lot. And while you enjoy your snacks- okay, okay, I'm getting there.
just calm your tits srsly

Today, I'll be talking about welcoming new users! If you're not interested, that's cool. You can keep the snacks I just gave you and continue enjoying my free HBO. But if you are interested in finding out more, then keep reading! An overview of welcoming new deviantART users, how to find them, tips, and do's and don'ts will be included, accompanied by appropriate GIF's for demonstration.

 Welcoming a new user

"A smile is the universal welcome."
Max Eastman

Admit it.
DeviantART is a huge place. A site with members from all over the globe.

And with 24 millions users (some of them plz accounts but forget that), it's easy to get "lost" in the sea. Over time, they do learn on their own, but sometimes, it's really necessary to give a hand, and show them the way. Welcoming others is a great and easy technique as to answer their questions about the site. While they do get their answers as time, it's a really nice thing to do to let them know the basics right away. Not only do you get good karma points, but you also make them feel special. Sounds like a win-win situation to me!

Interested?
Great to hear!
Lemme' walk you through the process! :la:

Argh! Stupid writer's block. Your Welcome Message

"I have an answering machine in my car. It says, I'm home now. But leave a message and I'll call when I'm out."
Steven Wright

Our first step is to write up a welcome message to use! It is obviously the most important ingredient in this recipe for success, so we better make it good. :la: Let's start with a simple greeting- such as, "Hello there!", "Hi!", or even "HI. I'M GONNA BE YOUR NEW FRIEND. LOVE ME. :iconattachedgirlfrieplz:" yes im pretty sure that last one is okay
So, now that we have our greeting, let's get down to the real message. :la:

  • Link me baby, one more time! - ♪ Oh Baby, baby, how are they supposed to know? That something wasn't right here? ♪... That was a line from BITney Speakers's "...Baby One More Time", not to be confused with Britney Spears's rip off of this fabulous song. The line is there because, well, links are just awesome! :dummy: Adding helpful links (such as the FAQ for example) will help answer questions they have on the first day of being a dA user. Try adding a link to the Welcome Forum so they can introduce themselves as well. Tutorials such as DeviantArt For Dummies by =mangasockattack and How to deviantART by `BrokenTutorials, that explain the basics, are also things you might want to link.

  • Wording is worth the effort. - Choose you words wisely! Make sure that sentence doesn't seem sarcastic. Oh, and the mood of that greeting is really heartwarming, so use it, use it, use it‼ Uncommon words may give off a professional feeling, but it's best we use them elsewhere, as it can be more intimidating than welcoming. Oh, and run on sentences are an absolute no-no, since those are just plain confusing. Obviously, add to the lighthearted and welcoming feel with positive adjectives! Just use them correctly. :giggle: And finally, add a touch of inspiring words for our new user, you know, for encouragement.

  • Keep it neat and tidy. - And organized. Definitely organized. A wall of text is scary, but use too many line breaks and that's just annoying. In other words, divide it by parts. For example, keep your links all wrapped up in one section (add a title if you like), and the rest of your message in another. Use <hr> (horizontal lines) to separate certain text when it is needed.
this gif just about summarizes it

  • Check for typographical, spelling, and grammatical errors. - This is obviously for your own good. You never know when a new user is a grammar Nazi. Sure, we all make mistakes sometimes, but that won't keep one from getting on your butt about how you're supposed to use "there" instead of "their" (It'll be even more annoying if it was just a typo or that cursed Autocorrect):stare:. Not only that, everyone appreciates good grammar, so really, why not? :)(Note: If English is not your first language and you're not fluent with it, it's perfectly okay. This part is mostly directed for those of us who have had it as our first language and/or are experts at it.)

Now, in case you're wondering, we're constructing only one special welcome message. "Why?"you ask. It's because we'll use it again and again! "Huh? The same welcome for different people? :O_o:" Yup, the same welcome message. This is because: 1. You'll have to be default (You'll read why later), 2. It's faster, and 3. You'll receive a cookie from the magical Internet Fairy.

"Why go through all this trouble for a message? I just want to find the new people and welcome them."
If you were planning to just welcome new users (as in you want none of this srs bsns), and you just wanted to know where you can find new users, then hang tight, as we're just about to cover how to find very, very new users.
Now let's move on! :la:

Here is how it should look like. If it doesn't look like this screen cap, then the problem could be either: 1. Glitch/Bug, 2. You computer is drunk, 3. You might be using IE

Great! Next step is to scroll down and ignore all the pretty new groups, popular threads, and C & C's! :la: You'll spot the new users below Popular Forum Threads.

deviantART Today by =fluf-studios
Figure B
Please note that really, really new groups may appear here as well, as you can see in Figure B.
If it doesn't look like this picture at all, either there really is a bug, your computer is drunk and you should get a new one, or you should really stop using IE.

It's that simple! Now that you've found new users to greet, we can go and say hi!

:lightbulb: Food For Thought

I'm giving life lessons and tips on how to take care of your emotional heart, because heart disease is the number-one killer in America.
Leeza Gibbons

Here are some things you should remember or consider when you're writing an awesome welcome message! :la:

  • Be default. - Or general. Remember, you won't know much about them! They've just joined the site, and are figuring things out. As much as it would be awesome to personalize your welcome message, they've yet to post much about themselves- so how could you write a personal welcome anyway? In other words, keep it simple, and easy to understand. And obviously, keep it in English- since it is the universal language. Should the user reply to you saying they don't understand, (or generally you get a new message full of symbols you don't understand no matter how much you try to) I suggest giving a link to #InternationalFAQ- a wonderful group that translates dA's FAQ into several languages.

  • Keep away from the jokes. - Innocent or dirty, lame or awesome, just keep them away. That means no memes, no innuendos, no references, nothing.  If you have to prove your worth as a comedian, a new user's page is not the best place to do it. Not everyone will have the same sense of humor as you do. Though I wont mind if you forward them to me- I'm lonely and I need my entertainment

  • Use the force power of the emoticon! - Emoticons are a powerful tool when adding the to the mood of a conversation. So make the most out of them. For example, :D just gives that cheerful vibe, and a :dummy: or :la: certainly gives the enthusiastic (maybe too enthusiastic) feel that can be very encouraging to the new guy. Here is an example:
"Hello there! Welcome to DeviantART, hope you enjoy your stay here! ... Again, welcome to deviantART!"
    versus
"Hello there! Welcome to DeviantART, hope you enjoy your stay here! ... Again, welcome to deviantART! :dummy:
The second one seems more enthusiastic and encouraging, doesn't it? Of course, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. So use your emotes wisely. (preferably after greetings & the start and finish)

:dummy: And that's wrap!

Now that you're done reading this, please continue enjoying your snacks and drinks, and everything else in my mansion.
and never leave me alone

Should you decide to leave, I'll leave this GIF here to send you off.

That is all! Thanks for reading, seize the moment, go miles, and have an awesome day‼

Devious A Day #2

Wed May 8, 2013, 5:25 AM
How do you do?Good day ladies and gentlemen!

It's time for our second of issue of Devious A Day! :la:
In this issue, it's time for works so captivating, they're probably magic! Purple WOOO "What magic is in this issue today?" you ask. The magic of spring, magical artwork, and actual magic!

So sit back, and relax. And enjoy your complementary snacks and beverage as well. :relax:

:? What is devious A Day?

Devious A Day is a small and simple feature series released daily. In each issue, I feature one deviation, one user, and one group, to spread a little more of that scrumptious dA love! :la: There is no set time when I post an issue- I post daily anytime before 00:00 (12:00 AM) PHT, or any time before the next day. Generally, I do it before the day ends in my time (PHT).

Shortcuts:

:deviation: Today's Deviation

There is something about yay! by ~weisthis that really gives off that light hearted, jolly feel of spring. Maybe it's that it has just the right amount of color contrast that makes the dandelion pop out. Maybe it's the definition of dandelion, as if it were popping out, as dandelions (and all other plants) are supposed to do when Spring comes. :giggle: Or maybe it's the colors of freshness and activity, which, in my opinion, totally scream "Spring".

I recommend :+devwatch: ing this lovely deviant and their works- you won't be sorry. ;)
